About the data
How the figures are calculated
- Open violations
- Open HPD violations in the building, counted by class. C is immediately hazardous, B hazardous, A non-hazardous. Source: Housing Maintenance Code Violations.
- Complaints
- What tenants reported about the building in 12 months: heat and hot water, pests, mold, leaks, and how many complaints the block had. Source: HPD Housing Maintenance Code Complaints.
- Bed bugs
- Bed bug reports filed by owners with HPD, by building. Source: HPD Bedbug Reporting.
- Buildings Department
- Open DOB violations on the lot, and how many are hazardous.
- Water tanks
- Water tanks on the roof, where the building has them.
- Lead pipes
- Lots on the block in DEP’s service-line inventory, by whether the pipe is recorded as lead, not lead or unknown.
- Rent around here
- HUD fair market rent for the ZIP code, the census tract’s median rent, and open affordable-housing lotteries from NYC Housing Connect.
How to read it
- Complaints are what tenants reported to 311 and HPD. They are not confirmed violations.
- Unknown is not lead. The inventory is DEP’s pipe record, not a water test.
- Evictions are those carried out by City Marshals, counted by area and never by building. Lotteries are advertised on Housing Connect; apply only there.
